The Intellectual Property Audit
(A Guide to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs))
Neeraj Parnami and Sunil Ailani
Abstract:
The term “Intellectual Property (IP) Audit” may be a magical word to those Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), running their own shop and handling a responsible position, who never take care of intellectual property generated in the company. In most of the cases, SME’s do not have sufficient time, money and resources to conduct a full audit of Intellectual Property in their business and find it difficult to build an IP portfolio describing a calculated value of IP assets in the business. They never realize the loss occurring due to avoidance of intellectual property importance in the business. The “Intellectual Property Audit” means to SMEs an assessment of the company’s assets.
In order to create an awareness among SMEs about the term “IP Audit”, scope of the IP audit, importance of the IP audit and the way to kick-start the IP audit in the company and the right people by whom the IP audit must be performed, the paper is written and is concerned with the identification and analysis of IP assets owned, used or acquired in a company.
